The Chairperson of the Rural Energy Board (REB), Ambassador (Rtd) Major General Jacob Kingu, has urged the Rural Energy Agency (REA) and the Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO) to provide a special device (Ready Boards) that will help reduce the high costs rural residents incur when installing internal wiring for electricity connections in their homes.

Ambassador (Rtd) Major General Jacob Kingu made the remarks today, November 16, 2025, while speaking with contractors implementing REA projects in Arusha Region.

He said the device would help increase the number of electricity customers and ease the financial burden on villagers who are required to install electrical systems in their homes under rural electrification projects.

In another development, he called on the REA management to engage regularly with stakeholders to gather insights that will support the achievement of the goals (resolutions) agreed upon during the M300 Conference held in the country.

He also directed project supervisors to intensify close monitoring of ongoing rural electrification projects across various parts of the country.

“REA continues to implement various projects in this region at a faster pace, aiming to ensure that all residents have access to energy services to improve social and economic services in rural areas,” said Ambassador Kingu.

He further stated that 965 hamlets, representing 64.12% of the 1,505 hamlets in Arusha, have already been connected to electricity through past and ongoing REA projects.

He explained that Arusha Region has a total of 368 villages, all of which—representing 100%—have been electrified through REA projects implemented in the region.

In another directive, he urged all contractors awarded REA projects to ensure that the projects are completed on time and meet the required quality standards so that citizens can fully benefit.

For his part, the REA Project Engineer for Arusha Region, Eng. Darwin Eradius, said that REA continues to implement various projects in the region as part of the Agency’s national strategy to extend electricity access to all citizens.

“In this region, two major electricity distribution projects in hamlets are ongoing, including the second phase of Hamlet Electrification Project (HEP 2A) and the Second Phase Intensification Project (REDP IIB).”

Likewise, the Government, through REA, has provided Tsh 79.6 billion to ensure these electricity projects are implemented so that citizens receive electricity services that will support economic and social development.

“These funds have been provided by the Government to improve social and economic development for the people,” said Eng. Eradius.

Contractors present at the meeting expressed their gratitude to President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan for empowering REA to implement various rural electrification projects in Arusha, which are expected to greatly accelerate development.

Contractors who attended the meeting included Ceylex Engineering (Pvt) Ltd and Urban and Rural Engineering Services Ltd.
