The World Cultural Heritage Site of the Ancient Ruins of Kilwa Kisiwani and Songo Mnara in Kilwa District continues to attract both local and international tourists. On October 31, 2025, the site received a total of 147 tourists from various countries around the world who arrived aboard the luxury cruise ship SH Diana, with the aim of exploring and experiencing the area’s historical attractions.

The visitors came from 13 countries, including France, Australia, Belgium, Canada, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Germany, Cyprus, New Zealand, the United States, Russia, Turkey, and Ukraine. The tour was organized by Savannah Tours Ltd in collaboration with Black Willow Safaris.

Speaking during the reception of the visitors, Senior Conservator Kelvin Stanslaus, the Site Manager, said the visit signified positive growth in Tanzania’s heritage tourism, noting the importance of Kilwa Kisiwani and Songo Mnara as UNESCO World Heritage Sites since 1981.

> “We are very delighted to see guests from all corners of the world coming to witness the rich history of Kilwa, which stands as a significant symbol of medieval international trade between East Africa and the rest of the world,” said Stanslaus.

During their tour, the visitors explored several historical structures, including the Great Mosque and the Sultan’s Palace, where they were impressed by the ancient stone architecture and the captivating historical narratives shared by officers from the Tanzania Wildlife Management Authority (TAWA), who specialize in archaeological heritage.

According to TAWA, which manages the heritage site, the arrival of the cruise ship is part of the Government’s ongoing efforts through the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism to strengthen heritage tourism, particularly in coastal, archaeological, and island areas of historical significance.
