MAHENGE GRAPHITE PROJECTS — MORE THAN JUST AN ECONOMIC PIPELINE

Mahenge, Morogoro

It has been revealed that the presence of graphite mining projects in Mahenge, Ulanga District, Morogoro Region, will open up various economic opportunities from the village to the national level, following the massive investment expected from two companies — Faru Graphite and Duma Graphite — under TanzGraphite.

This was stated on November 11, 2025, by the Acting District Executive Director of Ulanga, Juma Kapilima, while explaining the potential economic and social benefits that will arise from the major investments planned in the graphite mining projects.

Kapilima noted that the Faru Graphite Project is expected to create 900 direct jobs and 4,000 indirect jobs, which will in turn generate other small-scale employment opportunities for the Mahenge community and its surroundings.

Speaking about infrastructure development, particularly electricity, Kapilima said that the project includes a plan to extend a 220-kilovolt power line from Ifakara to Mahenge, along with the construction of access roads to connect the project site with nearby villages and sub-villages, easing transportation of various goods and services.

On her part, Jacqueline Mushi, Public Relations Officer for Faru Graphite, said that the company has already begun implementing its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives, which so far include the construction of three village offices in Mdindo, Kisewe, and Mdindo villages.

The project has also donated 100 bags of cement for the construction of the Makanga Village Office, supported the renovation of Makanga Primary School, and drilled boreholes in Mdindo Village.

Mushi further explained that the Faru Project aims to align with the vision of a green economy, recognizing the importance of graphite as a key raw material in the manufacture of modern technology devices. Through this project, Tanzania stands to gain a strategic position in the global clean technology value chain.

Meanwhile, Nestory Uhadi, the Village Executive Officer of Mdindo, stated that Mahenge hosts two major projects, but the Faru Project, in particular, has brought great optimism to the community. So far, over 1,200 affected residents have been compensated, seven classrooms at Makanga Primary School have been renovated, and two village offices have been constructed through the Faru Graphite initiative.

Uhadi added that the strong partnership between the village government and the investing companies has fostered great hope for continued local and community development in the area.
