VICE PRESIDENT ATTENDS MASS IN HONOUR OF THE FATHER OF THE NATION, MWALIMU NYERERE

URGES TANZANIANS TO CONTINUE PRAYING FOR HIM AND UPHOLDING HIS GOOD DEEDS

Vice President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Dr. Philip Mpango, has urged Tanzanians to continue praying for the Father of the Nation, the late Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere, so that he may continue to rest in peace and be among the saints.

Dr. Mpango made the call while joining leaders, believers, and citizens during a special memorial mass for the late Mwalimu Nyerere held at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Parish in Mwanjelwa, Mbeya Region.

He emphasized the importance of following the good example set by the Father of the Nation, especially for leaders, noting that Mwalimu Nyerere was a man of integrity who loved and served his country faithfully.

On behalf of the Government, the Vice President expressed gratitude to the believers and residents of Mbeya Region for turning up in large numbers to pray for the Father of the Nation as the country marks 26 years since his passing.

The mass was led by the Archbishop of the Catholic Archdiocese of Mbeya, Most Reverend Gervas Nyaisonga, who in his sermon described Mwalimu Nyerere as a man who lived by strong moral values, including righteousness, compassion, humility, and honesty.

Archbishop Nyaisonga highlighted that Mwalimu Nyerere left behind a rich political legacy—from the struggle for independence, the creation of the Union, to democratic reforms. He also noted that through the Arusha Declaration of 1967, Nyerere left behind a strong social and economic foundation aimed at building an equal and just society.

He added that Nyerere championed education as a means to eradicate ignorance and promote self-reliance, advocated for cultural identity through the use of the Kiswahili language, moral values, and the prioritization of national interests above personal gain.

Archbishop Nyaisonga further emphasized that the Father of the Nation played a vital role in regional and international liberation movements, supporting other nations in their struggles for independence. He also contributed significantly to the East African Community, South–South diplomacy, and global efforts to achieve economic equality between developed and developing nations.

He concluded by urging Tanzanians to continue praying for Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere, that he may be forgiven for his shortcomings and be declared Blessed.

The mass was also attended by Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa, Speaker of the National Assembly Dr. Tulia Ackson, Cabinet Ministers, and other senior government officials.
