TANZANIA LAUNCHES GLOBAL PROJECT TO COMBAT EPIDEMIC DISEASES AND HEALTH EMERGENCIES

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Energy, Hon. Dr. Doto Biteko, has launched a Global Project to combat epidemic diseases in Tanzania, urging all ministries, regional and local government authorities, and institutions to implement priority actions in addressing epidemic outbreaks and health emergencies.
Dr. Biteko issued the directive on October 15, 2025, in Mwanza, noting that the USD 38.7 million project aims to strengthen healthcare services for Tanzanians and drive the nation’s overall development.
He emphasized that ministries, institutions, and development partners must ensure effective oversight and tangible results from this investment.
> “All ministries, regional administrations, and institutions must implement key activities to combat epidemic diseases and other health emergencies in their respective areas. Ensure that not even a single shilling is lost or diverted from the intended goals,” said Dr. Biteko.
He added that the Government will continue to collaborate with both local and international stakeholders to strengthen the project so that it brings meaningful outcomes in combating epidemics that threaten lives and hinder development.
For her part, Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office (Policy, Parliament, and Coordination), Hon. Ummy Nderiananga, said the project’s launch marks an important milestone in the country’s efforts to fight epidemic diseases.
She explained that the project is jointly implemented by the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania, under the coordination of the Prime Minister’s Office through the One Health section, alongside development partners including the World Health Organization (WHO), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), and the Pandemic Fund.
Acting Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health and Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Grace Magembe, said the project will strengthen health system responsiveness to epidemics such as Ebola, MPOX, Marburg, Zika, and other diseases linked to climate change.
Dr. Magembe elaborated that effective implementation will enhance early detection and response to disease rumors and outbreaks.
She added that the funding will also facilitate improvements in national and regional laboratories, enabling accurate and timely data collection and analysis.
Acting Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health, Zanzibar, Dr. Salim Nassor Slim, expressed gratitude to national leaders for their efforts to improve citizens’ health and ensure a healthier population.
Meanwhile, UNICEF Deputy Country Representative, Dr. Patricia Safi, commended Tanzania for its strong collaboration with international organizations, affirming UNICEF’s commitment to continue working closely with the Government to address social challenges.
She said UNICEF’s contribution will focus on child development and ensuring that every child has access to essential services as outlined in the country’s development plans.
