The installation of a new natural gas-powered electricity generation plant at TANESCO’s Mtwara II station has been successfully completed, and the new machine has already begun trial operations to serve residents of Tanzania’s southern regions of Mtwara and Lindi.
Speaking during an inspection visit to assess the progress of the installation, TANESCO’s Acting Director of Customer Services, Ms. Irene Gowelle, said the milestone demonstrates the government’s commitment—under the Sixth Phase Administration—to strengthen reliable electricity access across the country.
> “With great success, the installation of the gas-powered electricity generator at our Mtwara II station has been completed ahead of schedule. The plant is now undergoing testing to ensure its efficiency and reliability in serving our customers,” said Ms. Gowelle.
She added that the plant will soon be officially inaugurated by Mtwara Regional Commissioner, Colonel Patrick Sewala, marking a major boost to power generation capacity in the southern regions of Mtwara and Lindi.
> “All these efforts reflect the government’s dedication under President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan to ensure that every Tanzanian has access to reliable electricity,” she emphasized.
Meanwhile, TANESCO’s Acting Deputy Director for Power Generation, Eng. Antony Mbushi, stated that the completion of the project will add an extra 20 megawatts to the southern power grid.
> “Previously, we had a capacity of 50.5 megawatts, but with this new plant, we now have a total of 70 megawatts serving Mtwara and Lindi regions. We assure our customers of a stable and sufficient power supply,” said Eng. Mbushi.
An electrical engineer, Mr. Fikiri Khalifa, praised the project’s rapid completion.
> “We initially expected the generator to start operating by the end of the month, but we have managed to finish ahead of schedule. This is a major achievement in implementing national energy projects,” he said.
The installation of this new power plant forms part of the government’s broader initiative to enhance access to reliable energy for all Tanzanians—particularly in regions like Mtwara and Lindi, which have long faced electricity shortages.
