The Ministry of Minerals today, October 18, 2025, participated in a Sports Bonanza held at John Merlin Secondary School grounds in Dodoma, bringing together employees from all institutions under the Ministry. The event is part of a quarterly tradition introduced by the Minister for Minerals, Hon. Anthony Mavunde, aimed at promoting unity, good health, and morale among employees to better serve the Government.

Speaking during the event, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Minerals, Eng. Yahya Samamba, emphasized that sports play a vital role in building unity and improving employees’ health to prevent non-communicable diseases. He noted that a healthy workforce is more productive and capable of achieving the Ministry’s and Government’s set goals.

He also encouraged all employees to turn out in large numbers on October 29 to vote for visionary leaders who will effectively steer the minerals sector toward sustainable growth and national development.

Furthermore, Eng. Samamba urged all institutions under the Ministry to continue working diligently and effectively to uphold the sector’s reputation both locally and internationally. He called for continued support to small-scale miners through advisory services, research, and equipment, as well as promoting investment by providing transparent and accountable information to mining companies.

“I want to commend all our institutions — the Mining Commission for maintaining excellent revenue collection, STAMICO for supporting small-scale miners with advice and machinery, GST for assisting miners at all levels with geological expertise, and TEITI for promoting transparency and accountability in the minerals sector, enabling citizens to understand the sector’s contribution and attracting investors through open governance,” said Eng. Samamba.

The bonanza brought together the following institutions: the Geological Survey of Tanzania (GST), State Mining Corporation (STAMICO), Mining Commission, and the Tanzania Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (TEITI).

Activities included a joint jogging session, 100-meter races for men and women, football — where the Mining Commission and STAMICO team defeated the Ministry and GST team 4–1, netball — where GST and TEITI teams won 17–14 against Ministry and STAMICO, and a tug-of-war where the Ministry women’s team emerged victorious.

Other fun games included egg races for both men and women and basketball matches. Eng. Samamba awarded medals and trophies to winning teams and individual performers. In addition, the Chairperson of the Mining Commission, Dr. Janeth Lekashingo, presented a special trophy to Eng. Samamba for his efforts in promoting sports among the Ministry’s staff and institutions.

Speaking during the event, Dr. Lekashingo said, “We thank the Permanent Secretary for continually promoting sports among Ministry staff — this spirit brings us success in all areas.”

The Acting Director of Administration and Human Resources, Ms. Beatrice Matemu, added, “We started this bonanza at 6:00 a.m. with a joint jogging session to warm up our bodies and boost the spirit of the games.”
