NEEC ENGAGES JOWUTA JOURNALISTS TO PROMOTE PUBLIC AWARENESS ON ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT

Dar es Salaam

In recognition of the vital role of the media in educating the public on economic issues, the National Economic Empowerment Council (NEEC) has met with journalists to provide detailed clarification on its mandate and the implementation of economic empowerment initiatives across the country.

Speaking during the meeting, NEEC Acting Executive Secretary, Ms. Neema Mwakatobe, said the collaboration between the Council and the media will help the public gain a broader understanding of NEEC’s functions and responsibilities through various programs that will be broadcast in the media.

“Through you, members of the press, the public will have the opportunity to understand in depth how the Council coordinates economic empowerment activities and the opportunities available for Tanzanians to participate in the national economy,” said Ms. Mwakatobe.

She explained that NEEC operates under the Prime Minister’s Office, with its main responsibility being to monitor and evaluate all economic empowerment initiatives implemented in the country.

Ms. Mwakatobe noted that the National Economic Empowerment Policy was established in 2004, followed by the Economic Empowerment Act of 2005, which formally created the Council to coordinate, monitor, and ensure meaningful participation of citizens in economic activities.

She added that NEEC works closely with ministries, institutions, and various stakeholders implementing empowerment programs, monitoring their execution to ensure that citizens directly benefit from them.

Furthermore, Ms. Mwakatobe emphasized that it is NEEC’s responsibility to identify all stakeholders implementing empowerment programs and provide the public with accurate information on available opportunities, enabling citizens to fully engage in the country's economic development.

For his part, the Secretary of the Journalists Workers’ Union of Tanzania (JOWUTA), Mr. Selemani Msuya, commended NEEC for providing this important training to their members, noting that it will enhance journalists’ understanding of the Council’s work.

“We thank NEEC for recognizing the contribution of journalists. Through this seminar, our members will become effective ambassadors in disseminating accurate information about economic empowerment to the public,” said Mr. Msuya.

Mr. Msuya further stated that JOWUTA currently has over 500 members nationwide, including more than 150 from the Dar es Salaam region. He urged NEEC to continue conducting similar training sessions for journalists in other regions to strengthen public education efforts.

During the seminar, four key topics were presented, including:

  1. Economic Empowerment Funds and Programs
  2. Participation of Tanzanians in the Economy
  3. Provision of Business Development Services
  4. Guidelines for Business Service Providers
