The Vice President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Dr. Philip Isdor Mpango, has today, October 16, 2025, inaugurated the modern Ngorongoro-Lengai Geological Heritage Museum (Urithi Geo Museum) following its official handover by the Government of China to the Government of Tanzania in Karatu District, Arusha Region.

The project, which cost Tanzanian Shillings 32 billion, was a grant from the Government of the People’s Republic of China aimed at enhancing tourism infrastructure, constructing a modern geological museum, and promoting conservation activities within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and the broader Ngorongoro-Lengai Geopark Development Project.

In his remarks during the inauguration, Dr. Mpango noted that Tanzania’s Ngorongoro Conservation Area was designated as a Geopark site in 2018—making it the only one of its kind in Sub-Saharan Africa and the second in the entire continent. He emphasized that the completion of this museum would attract more visitors seeking to learn about the country’s rich geological heritage.

Dr. Mpango further underscored the importance of training personnel who will serve visitors, maintaining and improving infrastructure, and ensuring the participation and benefit of local communities surrounding the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. He also urged Tanzanians to develop a culture of visiting national attractions, describing them as a vital part of the nation’s heritage.

The Chinese Ambassador to Tanzania, H.E. Chen Mingjian, stated that this unique project, implemented under the Belt and Road Initiative, demonstrates the strong and strategic cooperation between China and Tanzania, which dates back to 1964.

For her part, the Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism, Ambassador Dr. Pindi Chana, said that apart from its Geopark status, Ngorongoro has also been recognized as Africa’s Leading Tourist Attraction in 2023 and 2025 by the World Travel Awards network.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority (NCAA), Retired General Venance Mabeyo, commended the Sixth Phase Government for its continued efforts to improve the area’s infrastructure, noting that the establishment of the Geological Heritage Museum is a major milestone in developing new forms of tourism in Tanzania.
