DCEA Destroys Over 4,400 Kilograms of Narcotic Drugs in Dar es Salaam.
The Drug Control and Enforcement Authority (DCEA) on October 3, 2025, destroyed a total of 4,402.02 kilograms of narcotic drugs at the Twiga Cement Factory located in Wazo, Dar es Salaam.
Among the drugs destroyed were 2,168.18 kilograms of methamphetamine, 1,064.29 kilograms of heroin, 326.95 grams of cocaine, 515.48 kilograms of cannabis, and 653.74 kilograms of khat. These drugs had been stored as exhibits in various court cases related to drug trafficking.
Speaking to journalists before the destruction exercise began, DCEA Commissioner General Aretas Lyimo said the move was in line with the Drug Control and Enforcement Act of 2015, which requires such exhibits to be destroyed during ongoing trials or after judgments have been delivered.
“The court ordered the destruction of these drugs due to the risk of damage or alteration in form, as stipulated by the Drug Control and Enforcement Act of 2015, which requires narcotic exhibits to be destroyed either during proceedings or after sentencing,” said Commissioner General Lyimo.
Among the drugs destroyed while court proceedings are still ongoing include the case of Najim Abdallah Mohamed, which involved 882.71 kilograms of heroin and 2,167.29 kilograms of methamphetamine.
Additionally, drugs destroyed in cases where rulings had already been delivered and the accused sentenced include those of Hassan Azizi, Salum Shaaban Mpangula, and Hemed Juma Mrisho, famously known as “Hororo,” all of whom were sentenced to life imprisonment. Gumbo Ramadhani Ally was sentenced to 30 years in prison, Irene Dickson Mseluka to five years, and Gema Victor Mmasy to three years in prison.
Commissioner General Lyimo also issued a stern warning to drug traffickers, urging them to stop immediately as the Authority will not turn a blind eye to their illegal activities.
“The Authority will continue to take firm legal and operational measures to ensure Tanzania is protected from the harmful effects of narcotic drugs,” said Lyimo.
The DCEA further called on citizens to continue working closely with the government in the fight against drug abuse and trafficking, emphasizing that the war against narcotics is a shared responsibility.
