The Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO) has handed over two suspects to law enforcement from the areas of Madale kwa Kawawa and Tegeta kwa Ndevu after they were found involved in vandalism and illegal relocation of electricity meters against company procedures.
Speaking on September 15, 2025, during a special inspection operation, TANESCO Security Officer, Ms. Lilian William, said that the information was received through TANESCO’s whistleblower system concerning damage to electricity infrastructure in a house located at Madale kwa Kawawa, Dar es Salaam.
“Immediately after receiving the information, we arrived at the scene and found that an electricity pole had been cut and a Bahdela meter removed. Investigations revealed that the act was committed by a TANESCO casual worker employed under a group contract,” Ms. Lilian explained.
The suspect, Mr. Ally Salehe, admitted to the crime, citing a family dispute with his guardian, Mr. Imamu Salehe, as the cause. Further interrogations in collaboration with the Police uncovered that he also possessed other TANESCO equipment illegally stored, including one (01) Inhemeter, 100 Pg Clamps, a 30-meter ABC cable of 25mm, 19 Customer Interface Units (CIUs), and five (05) Dions — all TANESCO property.
The suspect is currently in custody and will be formally charged with vandalism before being taken to court for further legal action. Moreover, the electricity connection he made at his guardian’s house was unlawful since the registered meter location was Mwananyamala.
In another incident, an inspection carried out in Tegeta kwa Ndevu revealed that three (03) meters had been illegally relocated, with their registration traced to different areas than where they were installed. The tenant of the commercial premises, Mr. Baraka Koyoyo, is being held by the Police for further investigation and legal action.
TANESCO continues to encourage the use of the whistleblower system to expose criminal acts that sabotage the company, as such acts not only reduce TANESCO’s revenue but also hinder the broader development and economic growth of the nation.
The company emphasizes its commitment to working closely with law enforcement to ensure that proven offenders face the full force of the law, thereby enhancing the effectiveness and impact of this transformative system.
