TMA Issues Information on the Lunar Eclipse of September 7, 2025.
Dar es Salaam, September 6, 2025:
The Tanzania Meteorological Authority (TMA) wishes to inform the public about the upcoming lunar eclipse expected to occur on September 7, 2025.
A lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth passes between the Sun and the Moon, causing the Earth’s shadow to fall on the Moon’s surface. This happens when the Earth, the Moon, and the Sun are aligned in a straight line. A lunar eclipse is divided into two main types.
The first type is a Total Lunar Eclipse (Umbra), in which the Earth completely blocks sunlight from reaching the Moon, resulting in a dark shadow over the Moon’s surface. The second type is a Partial Lunar Eclipse (Penumbra), where the Earth causes a lighter shadow to appear on the Moon’s surface.
The lunar eclipse of September 7, 2025, will feature both a partial and total eclipse. This event is expected to be visible across parts of Europe, Asia, Australia, and Africa. In Tanzania, the partial phase of the eclipse will begin shortly after sunset and last until 8:29 p.m., followed by the total eclipse from 8:30 p.m. to 9:52 p.m. The eclipse will conclude with a partial phase from 9:53 p.m. to 11:55 p.m. In total, the phenomenon is expected to last for about six hours.
Generally, the lunar cycle is closely linked to ocean tides. During this event, sea levels are expected to rise slightly; however, no major impacts are anticipated. Weather conditions are forecast to be partly cloudy, offering a good opportunity for the event to be observed with the naked eye.
The Tanzania Meteorological Authority will continue to monitor this lunar eclipse and provide updates whenever necessary.
