The Tanzania Wildlife Management Authority (TAWA) has successfully captured a lioness alive following a series of attacks that left more than 20 livestock dead in Kondoa District, Dodoma Region.

The lioness was trapped by TAWA rangers at around 10:00 p.m. on September 6, 2025, in Chemchem village, after a three-day intensive operation. She was caught in a special trap set by the rangers.

Reports indicate that lions had been attacking livestock in Chemchem and Iyoli villages, Kingale Ward. At different times, they killed two cattle and a donkey, later killing 18 cattle at King’ang’a Prison. Additionally, two goats were killed in Iyoli village.

In response to the increasing incidents, TAWA launched an operation deploying its rangers and later bringing in a team of wildlife veterinarians. Finally, on the night of September 6, the lioness was safely captured using professional techniques.

Senior Wildlife Officer and veterinarian, Masalu Makoye Mroje, stated that the lioness will be relocated to a distant, suitable habitat to prevent further harm to people and their livestock.

Meanwhile, residents of Chemchem village, Kingale Ward, commended the government through TAWA for its swift action in addressing the challenge of problem wildlife, particularly the lioness that had caused widespread fear.

“We have been facing the challenge of dangerous and destructive wildlife for some time. The lions killed our livestock and troubled us, but today peace has been restored after TAWA managed to capture this animal and promised to continue pursuing the others to remove them from our village,” said the Chemchem Village Chairperson, Mr. Mashaka Said Funga.

TAWA has confirmed that investigations and monitoring are ongoing to establish whether more lions are present in the area, urging residents to promptly report any sightings.
