TANESCO CARRIES OUT MAINTENANCE WITHOUT POWER OUTAGE ON THE CHALINZE–KINYEREZI TRANSMISSION LINE
📍 Using Live Line Technology
📍 Customers continue enjoying electricity services during maintenance

The Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO) has conducted preventive maintenance on the 220kV transmission line from the Chalinze substation to the Kinyerezi substation in Dar es Salaam without interrupting electricity supply, thanks to the use of live line technology.
The maintenance involved replacing insulators that were identified as problematic during an inspection of the transmission line. Previously, such work would have required shutting down the line, which would have disrupted power supply to customers served through it.
Speaking during the exercise, Engineer Philemon Tirukaizile from TANESCO’s Transmission Department said the technology has eliminated the inconvenience of power cuts during maintenance.
“Without this live line maintenance technology, we would have had to switch off the transmission line for about six hours. This would mean that some of our customers from Chalinze through Mlandizi to Kibaha would have gone without electricity,” said Eng. Tirukaizile.
Explaining how the exercise is conducted, Sadiki Sadiki, Transmission Team Supervisor for the Coast Region, noted that the work is carried out by highly trained technicians with strict adherence to safety standards.
“Before we begin, we always communicate with our substation staff to obtain clearance to conduct the operation. We then have a team leader who issues instructions on who does what and when, while ensuring safety protocols are followed,” he explained.
On her part, Ms. Bahati Ramadhani, a technician in the unit, said she acquired the skills through specialized training provided by TANESCO.
“The company has really built my capacity. Before taking part in this work, I was first trained on the 400kV transmission line from the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Plant (JNHPP), and training is still ongoing. It is truly a source of pride for us to keep our customers connected at all times,” added Ms. Bahati.
This technology aims to minimize power losses that result from line shutdowns and to address customer complaints that previously arose whenever outages were necessary to facilitate preventive maintenance.
