PERMANENT SECRETARY MBUNDI LEADS TANZANIAN DELEGATION TO THE MEETING OF EAST AFRICAN COMMUNITY PERMANENT SECRETARIES IN PREPARATION FOR THE 35TH SECTORAL COUNCIL OF MINISTERS MEETING IN ARUSHA

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation responsible for East African Affairs, Ambassador Stephen Mbundi, has led the Tanzanian delegation to the preparatory meeting of the 35th Sectoral Council of Ministers in charge of East African Community (EAC) Affairs and Planning, as well as the 58th Extraordinary Council of Ministers Meeting of the EAC, at the level of Permanent Secretaries.


The meeting of Permanent Secretaries began yesterday, 03 September 2025, as a continuation of preparatory sessions for the 35th Sectoral Council of Ministers and the 58th Extraordinary Council of Ministers Meeting, following the conclusion of three days of experts’ meetings held from 31 August to 02 September 2025.


This meeting is attended by Permanent Secretaries from all eight EAC Partner States: the Republic of Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Republic of Kenya, the Republic of Rwanda, the Federal Republic of Somalia, the Republic of South Sudan, the Republic of Uganda, and the United Republic of Tanzania.


Issues tabled since the experts’ level and now being discussed by the Permanent Secretaries include various reports and proposals of the Community, such as the implementation of previous decisions and directives of the Sectoral Council of Ministers on EAC Affairs and Planning, the Draft 7th East African Community Development Strategy, the EAC Vision 2050, the EAC Digital Transformation Strategy 2025–2030, preparations for the EAC Language Policy, as well as the Community’s calendar of activities for July–December 2025. The meeting is also reviewing progress made in the removal of non-tariff barriers within the Community, and developments regarding political matters among Partner States.


The Permanent Secretaries’ meeting is chaired by the Secretary General of the East African Community, Ms. Caroline Karogo from Kenya, as Kenya currently holds the EAC Chairmanship.
