NATURAL GAS POWER PLANT TRANSPORTED TO MTWARA TO BOOST ELECTRICITY GENERATION.

The Tanzania Electric Supply Company Limited (TANESCO) has continued to take strategic measures to ensure reliable electricity supply in the regions of Mtwara and Lindi, in order to meet the growing demand driven by expanding economic and social activities.

This follows the company’s move to transport a 20-megawatt natural gas-powered electricity generation plant, technically known as TM 2500, from the Ubungo III power station in Dar es Salaam to Mtwara.

Speaking on September 11, 2025, during the transportation exercise, Engineer Godfrey Matiko, from the Mtwara II Power Generation Plant, said the new facility has a production capacity of 20 megawatts and will be integrated with the existing 20-megawatt plant. This will raise the total generation capacity at the Hiyari-based Natural Gas Power Station in Mtwara to 40 megawatts.

He explained that the electricity produced will be distributed across the Lindi and Mtwara regions to meet the rising demand for power.

“The transportation of this plant aims to strengthen the Mtwara II station, thereby improving the reliability of electricity supply for residents and investors,” said Engineer Matiko.

He also urged residents of Mtwara and Lindi to prepare to take advantage of investment opportunities that will be spurred by the availability of sufficient and reliable electricity.

It should be noted that Mtwara Region currently has a total power generation capacity of 50 megawatts from natural gas, and with the addition of this new 20-megawatt plant, the region’s total capacity will reach 70 megawatts.
