Mbeto Confronts OMO, Urges Him to Stop His Antics

By Our Correspondent, Zanzibar

Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) has stated that according to the law, no political party, media outlet, or institution has the authority to announce election results without the approval of the Zanzibar Electoral Commission (ZEC).

The party also emphasized that elections in any country in the world are governed by legal rules and procedures, not by arbitrary practices.

This position was made clear by the Secretary of the Special Committee of the NEC Zanzibar, Department of Ideology, Publicity, and Training, Khamis Mmbeto Khamis, when responding to remarks made by the ACT-Wazalendo presidential candidate, Othman Masoud Othman.

Soon after collecting his nomination forms to run for the presidency, Othman was heard criticizing the Early Voting Law, threatening and demanding that it should not be used.

Responding to that statement, Mbeto said the law was not drafted by angels, spirits, or demons, but by human beings entrusted with the responsibility to draft and pass laws.

He added that the law will continue to be in force in Zanzibar until the House of Representatives makes amendments through a legitimate process.

“There is no good or bad law once it has been enacted and passed by the Zanzibar House of Representatives. The Early Voting Law was ratified by that body. It was not drafted in the office of any political party,” said Mbeto.

Furthermore, the publicity secretary stressed that it is clear ACT, through its presidential candidate, has already sensed defeat after witnessing the remarkable development taking place and the people’s praise for the leadership of President Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi.

“No one has the power to stop people from voting if the law allows it. Anyone who threatens, prevents, or attempts to stop voters from going to polling stations will be dealt with according to the law,” Mbeto warned.

He further stated that if Othman already knows he cannot win, there is nothing wrong with him publicly declaring that he has accepted defeat.

“The law he is opposing was enacted by legitimate members of the Zanzibar House of Representatives. How can it be repealed today if that body has been lawfully dissolved?” Mbeto asked.

The publicity secretary concluded by saying that what Othman truly wants is to incite ACT youth to create chaos and unrest under the pretext of opposing the Early Voting Law, which has been in use in many countries around the world.
