The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has expressed its commitment to assist Tanzania in its plans to begin generating electricity using nuclear energy.

This was revealed during a meeting held on the sidelines of the 69th General Conference on Atomic Affairs, which concluded on September 19, 2025, in Austria.

The meeting was held between the Tanzanian delegation led by Prof. Carolyne Nombo, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, and Ms. Liliya Dullinet, Director of the Department of Nuclear Infrastructure at the IAEA.

The discussions were part of the ongoing cooperation between Tanzania and the IAEA, aimed at accelerating the implementation of the national plan for nuclear power generation.

During the talks, the IAEA pledged close collaboration with Tanzania in several priority areas, including technical and expert support to assist Tanzania in preparing its nuclear infrastructure.

Another key area is training local experts to strengthen Tanzania’s technical capacity so they can directly participate in the preparation and operation of nuclear projects, with IAEA already offering scholarship opportunities to Tanzanians.

The Agency also expressed readiness to support Tanzania in improving its legal and policy framework by providing guidance on strengthening laws, regulations, and oversight mechanisms for nuclear projects.

In addition, IAEA and Tanzania agreed to jointly prepare a National Action Plan for the implementation of the nuclear power generation project, starting from the preparatory phase.

The Agency further showed willingness to organize study visits for Tanzanian leaders and experts to gain knowledge and exchange experiences on nuclear technology for electricity production.

Speaking at the meeting, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Energy, Eng. Felchesmi Mramba, thanked the IAEA for its commitment to supporting Tanzania. He emphasized that Tanzania’s decision to embark on nuclear power generation is a direct implementation of the directives of H.E. Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, President of the United Republic of Tanzania, who has prioritized secure, reliable, and sustainable energy sources.

Other officials who attended the meeting included Eng. Joseph Kirangi, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Energy, Water, and Minerals from Zanzibar; Eng. Athuman Kilundumya, Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture; Prof. Najat Mohamed, Director General of the Tanzania Atomic Energy Commission (TAEC); Eng. Innocent Luoga, Commissioner for Electricity and Renewable Energy; and other nuclear experts.
