FINALLY, KALALANI VILLAGE GETS A NEW POLICE STATION: TANAPA FUNDS THE PROJECT

By Jacob Kasiri – Tanga

Excitement, joy, and celebrations filled Kalalani Village after the Tanzania National Parks Authority (TANAPA), through its Board of Trustees Chairman, retired Chief of Defense Forces General George Waitara, officially handed over a new police station to strengthen the security of residents and their property.

The construction of the police station cost approximately TZS 150.62 million and includes a building with more than eight rooms, a reception area, water supply and sewage systems, and an electrical installation. The project is part of TANAPA’s tradition of sharing the benefits of conservation and tourism with communities surrounding national parks to encourage their participation in protecting natural resources.

The Kalalani Police Station will address long-standing security challenges, as residents previously had to travel over 30 kilometers to access police services in Masewa Village.

While handing over the project to the District Commissioner of Korogwe, retired Conservation Commissioner Hon. William Mwakilema, on behalf of the villagers, Gen. Waitara emphasized the importance of the facility:

> “This police station is very important, especially considering Kalalani is a border village. Security expectations are high, and I urge the people of Kalalani and neighboring villages to work closely with the police officers who will serve here.”

During the ribbon-cutting ceremony to officially open the facility, Hon. Mwakilema said:

> “I want to remind the residents of Kalalani Ward that this building is not only for your security but also plays a vital role in safeguarding our Mkomazi National Park.”

On his part, Assistant Commissioner of Police Joseph Ng’weve, representing the Regional Police Commander of Tanga, thanked TANAPA for the support and noted that the station would be a great relief to Kalalani residents and surrounding areas that had long lacked nearby police services.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of Kalalani Village Government, Orolonyo Tulakani, expressed the community’s gratitude, saying they received the project with joy and high expectations, as it would help reduce crime and enhance peace.

The handover marked a symbol of cooperation and solidarity between TANAPA and the Police Force in promoting the safety and security of citizens and their property for sustainable development.

The inauguration ceremony of the Kalalani Police Station took place on September 22, 2025, in Kalalani Village, Korogwe District, Tanga Region, where the villagers contributed three acres of land for the project’s construction.
