The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy, Hon. Dr. Doto Biteko, represented the President of the United Republic of Tanzania at the funeral service of the late retired Bishop Dr. Martin Fatael Shao, who passed away on August 25 this year.
Speaking at the funeral service on September 4, 2025, held in Lole village, Moshi District, Kilimanjaro Region, Dr. Biteko said that the late Bishop Shao made numerous remarkable contributions during his lifetime that will be remembered even after his death.
“Our elder, the late Bishop Shao, began his church work as a young man and accomplished great deeds that everyone witnesses today. He left a lasting mark through his work,” he said.
“The President sent me to convey his deepest condolences to the family, all KKKT Church leaders, relatives, and friends,” he added.
Dr. Biteko emphasized that the government will always remember Bishop Shao’s contributions, noting that he served the Church throughout his life and continued to be an advisor even after retirement.
He encouraged mourners to continue supporting and standing with the bereaved during this period of grief, assuring them that the government is alongside them during this difficult time.
Meanwhile, the Presiding Bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania (KKKT), Dr. Alex Malasusa, urged believers to use this loss as an opportunity to thank God for a person like the late Bishop Shao, who exemplified a life of virtue.
He added that Bishop Shao was humble and attentive, qualities he noted are becoming increasingly rare in society.
“Humble leaders like Dr. Shao have become scarce, and those who mentored him did an excellent job… he accomplished many things both inside and outside the congregation,” said Bishop Dr. Malasusa.
He further explained that Bishop Shao’s life work involved extensive evangelism both within and beyond Tanzania’s borders with great skill.
“Let us not become accustomed to funerals; each loss gives us an opportunity to reflect on our own lives,” Bishop Malasusa said.
The funeral service was attended by thousands of mourners and various leaders, including former Prime Minister Frederick Sumaye, Minister of Education, Science and Technology Prof. Adolf Mkenda, Kilimanjaro Regional Commissioner Nurdin Babu, and CHAUMMA presidential candidate Salum Mwalimu.
