Dodoma to Shine in Tourism: Government Plans to Make it the Central Zone Tourism Hub.

By Our Reporter, Dodoma

The government has begun implementing a comprehensive strategy to enhance tourism attractions in Dodoma and the Central Zone with the aim of raising them to international standards.

The strategy focuses on improving infrastructure and services in Mkungunero, Swaga Swaga Game Reserve, and the Kondoa Irangi Rock Paintings. The Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism is working in collaboration with the Tanzania Forest Services (TFS), the Tanzania Tourist Board (TTB), and private stakeholders.

Acting Director of Tourism Development, Dainess Kunzugala, said the initiative aims to ensure that these attractions are equipped with quality roads, modern hotels starting from three-star standards, essential social services, as well as diverse tourism products and activities.

Joel Massai, Director of Epic Adventures, stated that the private sector is ready to work with the government to promote and enhance Dodoma’s attractions, emphasizing that the region is blessed with unique sites that could make it a tourism hub.

For his part, Senior Assistant Commissioner of TFS for the Central Zone, Mathew Kiondo, said some of Dodoma’s major attractions are located within game reserves managed by TFS, which are being developed and conserved to boost eco-tourism.

Senior Tourism Officer for TTB in the Central Zone, George Mwagane, noted that major national projects such as the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) and the construction of the Msalato International Airport will significantly stimulate tourism growth in the region.

Manager of the Kondoa Irangi Rock Paintings Site, Zuberi Mabie, revealed that domestic tourist numbers increased from 1,287 in 2018 to 7,654 in 2024, while international visitors grew from 171 in 2020 to 541 in 2024, thanks to government investment in infrastructure and quality services.

World Tourism Day was celebrated on September 27 under the theme “Tourism and Sustainable Development,” with more than 40 participants taking part in a two-day tour of the historic Kolo site in Kondoa.
