The Government of Austria, through UniCredit Bank, has pledged to provide the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania with 20 million Euros (approximately 60 billion Tanzanian shillings) for the implementation of electricity generation projects using solar energy and waste.

This was revealed by the Chief Executive Officer of Merl Solar Technologies GmbH, Eng. Hannes Merl, during discussions with the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Energy, Eng. Felchesmi Mramba, on September 17, 2025, on the sidelines of the 69th General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) taking place in Vienna, Austria.

To commence the implementation of these projects, Eng. Mramba invited the company to Tanzania to meet with local experts and begin preparations, assuring full cooperation to ensure the successful execution of the new power projects.

Eng. Mramba further explained that Merl has already implemented various solar power projects in Tanzania, noting: “This company has executed electricity projects in ten villages between 2015 and 2017.”

He cited those projects as 14 containerized solar power units installed in Kongwa District in Dodoma Region, Mlele District in Katavi Region, and Uyui District in Tabora Region, at a total cost of 16.2 billion shillings.

According to him, the projects provided electricity to 812 households, 27 places of worship, 6 schools, and 8 health centers.

Eng. Mramba expressed gratitude to the Austrian Government for the successful implementation of these projects and its commitment to strengthen cooperation with Tanzania in the implementation of the National Energy Compact, which aims to ensure electricity access for all Tanzanians by 2030 through the “Mission 300” program.

The meeting between the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Energy and Merl Solar Technologies was held at the Embassy of Tanzania in Vienna, Austria, and was attended by Tanzania’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to Austria, H.E. Naimi S. Aziz, along with the Commissioner for Electricity and Renewable Energy, Eng. Innocent Luoga.
