The Government, through the Ministry of Health and the President’s Office – Regional Administration and Local Government (PO-RALG), in collaboration with Health Sector stakeholders, has handed over a set of working tools to 3,561 Community Health Workers (CHWs) who have successfully completed community-level health service training.

This took place on September 8, 2025, during a brief graduation ceremony where 222 graduates in Lindi Municipal Council received their certificates, representing the first batch of 3,561 CHWs trained across 12 regions.

Speaking at the event, Lindi Regional Administrative Secretary, Ms. Zuwena Omary Jiri, said the Government continues to improve access to health services closer to the people. She emphasized that the newly graduated CHWs are now ready to begin their work, equipped with all the necessary tools to deliver effectively.

“This program was launched in 2024 by the Vice President of the United Republic of Tanzania, H.E. Dr. Philip Isdor Mpango. Back in the 1970s, we had a similar program that faced coordination challenges, but this current WAJA program has been improved to strengthen preventive health services within communities and to ensure we achieve Universal Health Coverage by 2030,” said Ms. Zuwena.

She commended the Government for establishing sustainable strategies to ensure the availability of qualified CHWs and urged them to uphold ethics and professionalism in the delivery of health services.

Earlier, the Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Grace Magembe, explained that CHWs are selected by members of their own communities, with each sub-village or street electing two representatives—one male and one female. They then undergo three months of classroom training followed by three months of practical community training.

“These health workers are now ready to provide services in the community. Today, the Government is handing them working tools including uniforms, bicycles, tablets, medical kits such as blood pressure monitors, glucometers, thermometers, weighing scales, and health education materials. All these aim at strengthening preventive healthcare at the community level,” said Dr. Magembe.

Dr. Magembe further noted that the tablets will help CHWs record and transmit data into the Health Management Information System (MTUHA), which has now gone digital, enabling the Government to access accurate information for improving health services across the country.

Speaking on behalf of the graduates, Mr. Dickson Maluchila thanked the Government and health stakeholders for the training and provision of tools, pledging that they will play a key role in reducing the disease burden and ensuring communities access timely and nearby health services.
