The Selous Marathon, held today August 23, 2025, for the seventh time in Morogoro, continued to attract thousands of participants and fans. Among the institutions that stood out was the Tanzania Forest Services Agency (TFS), which showcased a new national outlook on sports participation as a tool for promoting tourism and community health.
As one of the main sponsors of the marathon, TFS participated with 35 staff members who ran in the 21km, 10km, and 5km categories. Through this participation, the agency used the event as a practical platform to advance the concept of sports tourism, raise awareness on the importance of forest conservation, and increase public knowledge about the country’s natural attractions.
Speaking after completing the 10km race, Senior Assistant Commissioner of TFS, Hussein Msuya, said the participation was part of the institution’s directive to ensure that sports become an integral part of employees’ lives in order to fight non-communicable diseases and enhance productivity.
“Our participation in the Selous Marathon is not just about competition, but to demonstrate the concept of sports tourism as our slogan states, ‘Run while touring.’ We have strengthened our staff’s health, spread the conservation message, and contributed to promoting domestic tourism through natural attractions managed by TFS,” said Msuya.
He added that sports have continued to prove their role in nation-building, quoting President Samia Suluhu Hassan, who has repeatedly emphasized the importance of sports as a sector with significant economic, social, and health contributions.
For her part, TFS Tourism Officer, Salome Kivuyo, said the agency distinguished itself by having its participants wear special jerseys inscribed with “Visit Hululu Waterfalls” instead of the official race shirts provided by the organizers.
“We used this marathon as a platform to promote one of our key attractions – the Hululu Waterfalls located in the Uluguru Nature Forest Reserve under TFS management. These waterfalls are a unique attraction with clean, ever-flowing waters throughout the year and are easily accessible from Dar es Salaam by road or via the SGR Morogoro station,” said Salome.
She added that besides the large banners displayed along the race routes and stadium, other TFS attractions such as the Uluguru forests, Choma Waterfalls, and Charagule Springs were also promoted.
Among the marathon participants, Natasha Mtenga expressed her excitement after seeing the TFS attraction banners.
“The scenery of Hululu and Choma Waterfalls as displayed left me eager to experience them firsthand. This is a unique form of tourism that every Tanzanian should enjoy,” she said cheerfully.
Salome also took the opportunity to call on sports and tourism stakeholders to prepare for the upcoming Meru Forest Adventure Race 2025, to be held at Napuru Reserve in Arusha, an area renowned for ecological tourism.
“These competitions have grown year after year: from 300 participants in the first season, 500 in the second, and this year we expect more than 700 participants. It is a unique opportunity to integrate sports with forest tourism,” she said.
Participants can register through the payment numbers provided by the organizers (Vodacom - 5815522 Quality Sports Promoter), with preparations underway for various shows and attractive prizes.
