TFS and Finland Collaborate to Improve Quality Tree Seeds

The Tanzania Forest Services Agency (TFS), in collaboration with local and international institutions, has initiated a process to enhance the production of high-quality tree seeds aimed at promoting industrial forestry and environmental conservation.

This development took place on August 6, 2025, at the Sao Hill Forest Plantation in Mufindi District, Iringa Region, during a joint visit involving TFS's Seed Directorate and international partners including FORLAND Tanzania, TAPIO from Finland, and the Tanzania Forestry Graduates Association (TTGAU).

Speaking during the visit, TFS Chief Conservator Dr. Fortunate Senya said the main goal is to ensure that quality tree seeds, such as eucalyptus and pine, are produced to meet both national and international standards, thereby supporting industrial forest plantations and contributing to economic and environmental sustainability.

“We have witnessed the effectiveness of improved tree seedlings in the Irundi nursery. This is an important step toward ensuring the availability of quality seeds, especially for plantations that need replanting after harvesting,” said Dr. Senya.

The delegation also toured the Second Division of the Ihefu Plantation, where they inspected a special eucalyptus seed production plot.

Experts highlighted both achievements and challenges, emphasizing the need for strategic planning before establishing new seed production plantations.

Furthermore, stakeholders expressed satisfaction with the measures taken by TFS to protect plantations from fire outbreaks, particularly during the dry season — a critical component of sustainable forest management.

According to TFS, the Sao Hill Forest Plantation is among the sites benefiting from high-quality seeds produced by the agency’s research and production centers, through strategic collaboration with conservation stakeholders. These seeds also help reduce reliance on natural forests and support efforts to combat climate change.

Representatives from TAPIO Finland and FORLAND noted that Tanzania has significant potential to become a leader in quality tree seed production in Africa, provided that emphasis is placed on research, technology, and participatory management.
