The Government of the United Republic of Tanzania, through the Rural Energy Agency (REA), has implemented a solar power project worth TZS 801.74 million in all five islands of Kilwa District. The project aims to increase electricity access in remote areas that are off the National Grid and promote the use of clean energy technologies through solar systems.

Speaking while receiving the project report, Lindi Regional Administrative Secretary, Ms. Zuwena Jiri, confirmed receipt of the project and urged residents, especially those living on the islands, to seize this opportunity since the Government has already provided subsidies.

“Each household will have its own standalone solar system. My appeal to the residents, particularly those on the islands, is to take advantage of this opportunity. If one were to install a solar system individually, it would be very costly, but now the Government has provided up to 75% subsidy,” said Ms. Zuwena.

In addition, Ms. Zuwena encouraged Lindi residents to embrace the Improved Cookstoves initiative, for which the Government has subsidized 85% of the cost, reducing the price of each stove to TZS 9,000 compared to the actual market price of TZS 60,000.

For his part, REA’s Energy Technology Manager, Eng. Michael Kyessi, stated that the project will distribute 5,576 Improved Cookstoves in Lindi Region, with 1,115 cookstoves allocated to each district.

“The total project cost for Lindi Region is TZS 346,560,000, of which the Government will contribute TZS 294,576,000 in subsidies. The service provider is Tango Energy Ltd, and a total of 5,576 improved cookstoves will be sold to residents at the subsidized price. The actual cost of one cookstove is TZS 60,000, but with an 85% subsidy equivalent to TZS 51,000, each resident will only pay TZS 9,000. These cookstoves will be distributed across five districts of Lindi Region,” said Eng. Kyessi.

Regarding the solar project that will reach 1,227 households in the five islands of Lindi, Eng. Kyessi explained that the systems are divided into three capacity categories: 50Wp, 80Wp, and 100Wp. A total of 736 units are 50Wp, 307 units are 80Wp, and 184 units are 100Wp.

“The subsidy rate depends on the system capacity: households installing a 50Wp system will receive a 75% subsidy, those with 80Wp will receive a 65% subsidy, and those with 100Wp will receive a 55% subsidy,” added Eng. Kyessi.

The total cost of the solar project in Lindi Region is TZS 801.74 million, with subsidies amounting to TZS 544.21 million (68% of the total cost), while beneficiaries will contribute TZS 257.53 million.

In Lindi Region, the project will serve five islands through a single service provider, expected to install 1,227 solar systems within two years.
