NUMBER OF MINERS RESCUED FROM UNDERGROUND COLLAPSE RISES TO SEVEN

The number of miners rescued after being trapped under debris in a mine has risen to seven, following the retrieval of Marko Ngelela (26), a resident of Sengerema, and Machia Shabani (43), a resident of Ishokela in Mwanza Region, who were both found dead.

The accident occurred on August 11, 2025, at the Nyandolwa mine, where 25 miners were carrying out repair works in three different shafts, namely No. 20, 103, and 106. According to preliminary reports, the ground suddenly caved in, causing debris to collapse and trap some of the miners working underground.

Since the incident, extensive rescue efforts have been underway, involving the mine’s rescue team in collaboration with security agencies and mining safety experts. So far, seven miners have been retrieved, of which four were rescued alive—one of them later passed away while receiving treatment at Salawe Health Center—while three were recovered already deceased.

The condition of the remaining 18 miners still trapped underground remains unknown, as rescue operations continue cautiously due to the difficult and hazardous conditions inside the mine.

Authorities have urged the public to remain calm as rescue efforts proceed, assuring that every possible measure is being taken to save the lives of those still trapped.
