Journalists in Tanzania have been called upon to use their professional skills to encourage and educate citizens to turn out in large numbers to vote on October 29, 2025.
The call was made by the Chairperson of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Hon. Court of Appeal Judge Jacobs Mwambegele, while opening the National Meeting between the Commission and journalists on the General Election. The event took place on August 2, 2025, at the Mlimani City Conference Hall in Dar es Salaam.
Justice Mwambegele emphasized that the media plays a critical role in ensuring citizens actively participate in the General Election by providing accurate and timely information on various electoral issues.
He further noted that journalists have a key responsibility to educate registered voters so that they turn out in large numbers to cast their votes.
On his part, the Director of Elections, Mr. Kailima Ramadhani, reminded journalists of their obligation to ensure that political parties and candidates are given fair opportunities to communicate their messages to voters during the campaign period.
Mr. Kailima also urged journalists to provide accurate information to the public and avoid spreading misinformation at all stages of the electoral process, while stressing the importance of adhering to media laws and professional ethics.
He called on journalists to use their platforms to promote peace before, during, and after the elections, to safeguard national unity and strengthen democratic foundations.
Additionally, he warned against publishing or broadcasting content that could discourage citizens from participating in the elections, whether as voters or candidates.
The meeting between INEC and journalists is part of a series of stakeholder engagements organized by the Commission in preparation for the 2025 General Election.
These meetings began on July 27, 2025, with political party leaders, followed by representatives of non-governmental organizations, women, youth, persons with disabilities, and media editors. The series is expected to conclude on August 4, 2025, with a session for online content creators, followed by training for editors and journalists.
