INEC Urges Media to Report Accurately on 2025 General Election

Dar es Salaam, August 1, 2025

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has called on media houses across the country to ensure accurate and timely reporting on issues relating to the 2025 General Election, to enable citizens to fully participate in the electoral process.

The call was made today in Dar es Salaam by INEC Chairperson, Hon. Court of Appeal Judge Jacobs Mwambegele, during the official opening of a meeting between the Commission and media editors.

Justice Mwambegele emphasized the critical role of the media in providing voter education and disseminating accurate information to help citizens make informed decisions freely and peacefully. He urged editors to use their platforms to educate and encourage registered voters to turn out in large numbers to cast their votes on October 29, 2025, the official date of the General Election.

He further underscored that close collaboration between the Commission and the media is essential to ensure a peaceful election conducted in compliance with electoral laws.

Speaking during the event, INEC’s Director of Elections, Mr. Kailima Ramadhani, highlighted the media’s unique role in the success of the electoral process, as it remains the primary source of verified and researched information for the public.

“In any country aspiring to successfully conduct an election, the media forms the foundation because it provides accurate and verified information to the public. Without close cooperation with the media, the Commission’s efforts to deliver voter education and information cannot reach the intended audience,” Mr. Kailima stated.

He added that all election stakeholders, including political parties, rely on the media to provide information that enables citizens to participate fully in the electoral process. He stressed that the media should also take the lead in addressing and correcting any misinformation or disinformation, whether deliberate or accidental, concerning the Commission and the electoral process.

“We urge you to make full use of the platforms at your disposal to ensure regular updates and accurate information about the election,” he emphasized.

Editors were also reminded to use the official slogan for the 2025 General Election:
“Your Vote, Your Right – Turn Out and Vote”,as part of public awareness efforts to encourage voter participation.
