The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Energy, Hon. Dr. Doto Biteko, has affirmed that the Government will continue to support and collaborate with all religious institutions to foster development and improve the well-being of citizens.

Dr. Biteko made the statement on August 17, 2025, while representing the Vice President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Hon. Dr. Philip Mpango, as the guest of honor at the celebrations marking 125 years of Christianity and Evangelization at Kome Parish in the Catholic Diocese of Geita.

“The Government will continue working hand in hand with religious institutions in implementing development projects, ensuring that citizens attain meaningful progress,” said Dr. Biteko. He further emphasized that the Government appreciates the contribution of religious institutions in bringing development to communities.

Alongside the Jubilee Mass, Dr. Biteko led a fundraising drive to support the construction of a water project that will provide services at the Sisters’ residence in Kome Parish.

Speaking after the Mass, the Bishop of Geita Catholic Diocese, Rt. Rev. Flavian Kassala, offered prayers for blessings in the process of choosing the right leaders in the upcoming General Election scheduled for October 2025.

Bishop Kassala also expressed gratitude to the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Hon. Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, and the Sixth-Phase Government for their collaboration with religious institutions, which have been instrumental in driving development across the country.

He pointed out that access to clean and safe water on Kome Island remains a challenge and appealed to the Government to ensure reliable water supply for the residents.

“Although we are surrounded by water here, access to clean water is still limited, and only a few residents can afford it,” Bishop Kassala noted.

He further explained that the Church is striving to extend social services by increasing the number of Sisters who will provide community services—hence the urgent need for adequate water supply.

Dr. Biteko assured that the Government would conduct feasibility assessments to guarantee reliable water access, particularly for the Sisters. He also urged Kome residents to strengthen cooperation, protect the environment, and plant trees to restore natural vegetation.

In support of the project, Dr. Biteko personally contributed TZS 10 million and delivered President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s donation of TZS 50 million to facilitate the water project for the Sisters’ residence in Kome.

Earlier, while delivering the homily at the 125th-anniversary celebration, the Archbishop of the Mbeya Archdiocese, Rt. Rev. Gervas Nyaisonga, urged believers to embrace unity, patience, and harmony within society.

“As we celebrate 125 years of mission, let us remember that we are called to nurture unity and peace among ourselves. We are all human, with weaknesses and shortcomings, but let us turn to God for strength,” said Archbishop Nyaisonga.

On the upcoming General Election, Archbishop Nyaisonga called on Catholics to hold special 24-hour prayers from August 23–24, 2025, seeking a peaceful election that will usher in good and capable leaders.
