DR. LADISLAUS CHANG’A PARTICIPATES IN THE 6TH ASIA-PACIFIC MINISTERIAL AND ENVIRONMENT AUTHORITIES FORUM
Nadi, Fiji – August 29, 2025
The Acting Director General of the Tanzania Meteorological Authority (TMA) and Vice-Chair of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), Dr. Ladislaus Chang’a, at the invitation of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), actively participated in the 6th Asia-Pacific Ministerial and Environment Authorities Forum (6th AP Forum) held from August 26–29, 2025, in Nadi, Fiji. The Forum was jointly organized by the Government of Fiji and UNEP under the theme “Seeking Sustainable Solutions to Address the Impacts of Climate Change and Environmental Challenges Worldwide.”
Alongside the Forum, Dr. Chang’a held various bilateral meetings with dignitaries and institutions, including a session with Hon. Rupa B. K., Minister of Forests and Environment of Nepal, where he provided updates on the IPCC work programme scheduled for implementation until 2029. Their discussions focused on strengthening regional and international cooperation in addressing climate change impacts and improving environmental policies. Hon. Rupa expressed her appreciation and commended the significant work being carried out by the IPCC.
Additionally, Dr. Chang’a participated in and moderated a ministerial-level session on multi-hazard early warning systems, including those related to weather- and climate-induced disasters. This ministerial panel featured Hon. Thoriq Ibrahim, Minister of Tourism and Environment of the Maldives; Hon. Mona Ainu’u, Minister of Natural Resources of Niue; Hon. Dr. Maina Vakafua Talia, Minister of Home Affairs, Climate Change, and Environment of Tuvalu; Ms. Fleur Downard, Director of International Environment and UN Section, Department of Climate Change, Energy, Environment and Water of Australia; and Mr. Sefanaia Nawadra, Director General of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP).
The session highlighted the importance of multi-hazard early warning systems (MHEWS) as one of the most effective measures to mitigate the impacts of climate change and environmental risks, with the ultimate goal of protecting lives and ecosystems.
The 6th Asia-Pacific Ministerial and Environment Authorities Forum also served as an important platform bringing together governments, regional organizations, youth groups, the private sector, and other stakeholders. Their contributions and perspectives will feed into the preparations for the upcoming Seventh Session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-7), scheduled to take place in December 2025 in Nairobi, Kenya.
