The Deputy Minister for Minerals, Hon. Dr. Steven Kiruswa, has called on rescue teams to increase speed and effort in rescuing small-scale miners trapped underground following the collapse and cave-in at the Nyandolwa gold mine, owned by the Wachapakazi group, located in Mwongozo Village, Mwenge Ward, Shinyanga Municipal Council, Shinyanga Region.

Speaking after visiting the scene, Dr. Kiruswa said the government continues to closely monitor the rescue efforts, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing the lives of those trapped underground through swift and professional operations.

He added that in the August 11, 2025 accident, about 25 miners were trapped underground when the mine collapsed. So far, reports indicate that four have been rescued alive, but one of them later died while receiving treatment at Shinyanga District Hospital. Rescue efforts for the remaining miners are still ongoing.

"We continue to work closely with rescue agencies, including the Fire and Rescue Force, mining experts, and community members, to ensure we reach the remaining miners as quickly as possible," Dr. Kiruswa said.

In addition, Dr. Kiruswa expressed condolences to the families of the victims and urged small-scale miners to follow safety procedures and regulations in mining activities to prevent such accidents in the future.

The government has pledged to continue providing technical support and equipment to facilitate the rescue operation and ensure it is carried out effectively and safely.

For his part, the Chief Mines Inspector from the Mining Commission, Engineer Khamisi Kamando, said the accident occurred in the morning while miners were carrying out repairs on three separate shafts (maduara), which collapsed while they were underground.

A rescue team from Barrick Bulyanhulu Gold Mine, a large-scale gold mining operation, has also arrived at the scene to strengthen the rescue efforts.
