The Civic United Front (CUF) is set to hold a Special General Meeting tomorrow, August 9, 2025, to approve presidential candidates for both the United Republic of Tanzania and the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar, who were nominated by the party’s National Executive Council on August 6 this year.
Speaking today, August 8, 2025, at the party’s headquarters in Dar es Salaam, CUF National Chairman Professor Ibrahim Lipumba announced that the proposed candidates for the Union Presidency are Gombo Sambandito Gombo and Nkunyuntila Siwale.
For the Zanzibar Presidency, the nominees are Engineer Mohamed Habib Mnyaa, Engineer Hamad Masoud Hamad, and Dr. Mohamed Habib Mikidadi. Delegates at the Special General Meeting will cast their votes to select one candidate to carry the CUF flag in the upcoming October 2025 General Election.
Additionally, Prof. Lipumba stated that during the meeting, CUF will also officially launch its Election Manifesto, which outlines the party’s policies and vision to gain public trust and secure electoral victory.
> “The National Executive Council has received and approved the draft manifesto for both the Union and Zanzibar, and has also endorsed parliamentary and house of representatives candidates,” said Prof. Lipumba.
He further emphasized that CUF’s manifesto carries a broad vision of building a New Tanzania through a Government of National Unity, grounded in principles of equality, solidarity, accountability, genuine democracy, and inclusive development for all.
> “Our manifesto is based on promoting equal rights and happiness for all citizens, building an inclusive economy that creates jobs and reduces poverty, strengthening democratic principles and the rule of law by adopting a new constitution based on citizens' views, and laying the foundation for sustainable development by implementing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030,” Prof. Lipumba added.
He also stated that the CUF manifesto supports the party’s policy that a basic income is a right for every Tanzanian, proposing to provide a basic subsistence income to all citizens aged 60 and above.
> “We believe that if the general election is free and fair, CUF candidates will emerge victorious,” said Prof. Lipumba.
In a separate development, Prof. Lipumba expressed his satisfaction with recent reforms by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), including the provision of official copies of the Permanent Voters’ Register to political parties—an important step that will help party agents identify the names and number of registered voters at polling stations.
