The World Bank (WB) has announced that it will finance the construction of a high-voltage 400kV power transmission line from Uganda to Tanzania.

This was revealed by the World Bank Energy Specialist in Tanzania, Dr. Rhonda Jordan, during a meeting with the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Energy, Eng. Felchesmi Mramba, at the Ministry’s headquarters in Mtumba, Dodoma, on July 23.

Dr. Rhonda stated that the Bank has now approved the project after confirming that it poses no environmental risks, contrary to earlier concerns.

“The Board of Directors will now release funds to begin implementing this project, which had been delayed due to environmental concerns. However, the Board is now satisfied and will provide funding for its execution,” said Dr. Rhonda.

In addition, Dr. Rhonda invited the Ministry of Energy to participate in the United Nations General Assembly to be held in New York, USA, in September 2025.

During the discussion, Permanent Secretary Mramba assured Dr. Rhonda that Tanzania will continue working closely with the World Bank on various energy projects, including the Tanzania-Zambia (TAZA) power transmission project and other similar initiatives.

The meeting was also attended by the Commissioner for Electricity and Renewable Energy, Eng. Innocent Luoga, and Chief Electrical Engineer, John Mageni.
