WMA Issues Stern Warning to Fuel Traders Who Tamper with Measurement Standards.
The Manager of the Weights and Measures Agency (WMA) – Port Unit, Alfred Shungu, has issued a strong warning to fuel traders found tampering with fuel measurement standards, particularly through the use of substandard equipment. He stated that such individuals will face strict legal action, including imprisonment or a fine not exceeding TZS 20 million for the first offense.
Shungu made these remarks on July 2, 2025, while speaking to journalists at the 49th Dar es Salaam International Trade Fair (DITF), popularly known as Sabasaba, currently underway at the Mwalimu Julius Nyerere Grounds along Kilwa Road in Dar es Salaam.
He explained that the goal of these measures is to ensure the integrity of fuel measurement systems for the benefit of both the government and consumers. Shungu added that WMA conducts inspections from the time fuel arrives by ship through to delivery at petrol stations, aiming to protect consumer rights and ensure proper tax compliance.
As a precaution, Shungu urged members of the public to check for the WMA seal on fuel pumps to confirm that they have been officially verified.
"When being served fuel, make sure the pump starts counting from zero (0), not from any other number like two (2)," he emphasized.
Furthermore, Shungu encouraged fuel users to stay vigilant and visually monitor the pump readings while being served to avoid being cheated.
