The Minister for Minerals, Hon. Anthony Mavunde (MP), has revealed that the strategic uranium mining project is set to begin soon following the completion of the construction of a pilot processing plant for the minerals.
He made the remarks on July 18, 2025, during his official tour to inspect the progress of the project in Namtumbo District, a project implemented by Mantra Tanzania Limited and estimated to cost over TZS 3.06 trillion upon full completion.
"One of the priorities of the Sixth Phase Government under the leadership of H.E. Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan in the mining sector is the value addition of minerals within our country. The President has given us specific directives to ensure this is implemented," said Minister Mavunde.
"The commencement of this project, which also includes the construction of a uranium value addition plant, demonstrates the government’s commitment to this agenda. At the Ministry of Minerals, we will continue to closely supervise the project to ensure it benefits our country," he added.
With uranium deposits estimated at 139 million tonnes and a projected mine life of 22 years, Tanzania is poised to become one of the top 10 uranium producers in the world.
Highlighting the benefits of the project, Minister Mavunde noted that aside from directly creating over 4,000 jobs, and more than 100,000 indirect employment opportunities, Mantra Tanzania has already initiated talks with the government to construct a power plant that will utilize uranium extracted from the mine to generate electricity.
Minister Mavunde also emphasized that, beyond national revenue gains, the project will transform the image of Namtumbo District and significantly improve the livelihoods of surrounding communities.
Earlier, during the briefing session, Mr. Majani Moremi, the Project Development Manager from Mantra Tanzania, thanked the government for its continued support, which has enabled the commencement of the project. He assured that the project will bring the expected benefits and success to the country.
On his part, the Regional Commissioner of Ruvuma, Hon. Colonel Ahmed Abbas, thanked President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan for creating a favorable investment environment that led to the implementation of the project in Ruvuma Region. He pledged full regional cooperation with Mantra Tanzania to ensure the successful execution of the project for the benefit of the nation and the people of Namtumbo.
