It has been reported that from July 2024 to March 2025, a total of TSh 51.42 billion was loaned to 127 small-scale miners through various financial institutions in the country, as part of efforts to provide capital to registered small-scale miners operating in different groups across Tanzania.

This was revealed today, July 6, 2025, by the Deputy Minister of Minerals, Hon. Dr. Steven Kiruswa, during the official closing of a skills development training program for 467 small-scale miners. The training was organized by the Prime Minister's Office – Labour, Youth, Employment and Persons with Disability in collaboration with the Ministry of Minerals.

Dr. Kiruswa stated that the Sixth Phase Government continues to implement strategies to empower small-scale miners by equipping them with skills to enhance productivity, safety, and efficiency in mining operations.

He explained that the Government recognizes and values the contribution of small-scale miners, who account for 40% of the country’s mineral revenue. Therefore, the Government will continue building their capacity in various ways and supplying them with the necessary working tools and equipment as needed.

Earlier, the Assistant Director of the Employment and Skills Development Department from the Prime Minister’s Office, Ms. Alana Nchimbi, noted that since the launch of the National Skills Development Programme in 2016, the Government has spent TSh 111.3 billion, benefiting a total of 157,909 individuals.

She added that in the 2024/25 financial year, the Government allocated TSh 10.8 billion for the implementation of the program, benefiting 10,786 individuals — among them, 479 are small-scale miners from the Geita Region.

For his part, the Chairman of Small-Scale Miners in Geita Region, Mr. Titus Kabuo, thanked the Government for its continued support through skills development training.

He said that the efforts by the Prime Minister’s Office in collaboration with the Ministry of Minerals demonstrate a genuine commitment to empowering miners to operate professionally.

The one-week training involved over 200 small-scale miners from various parts of Geita Region. Participants received both theoretical and practical training on effective prospecting and mining techniques, proper use of equipment and chemicals, environmental conservation, as well as occupational health and safety.
