TMA BOARD CONDUCTS WORKING VISIT TO WEATHER RADAR STATIONS AT BANGULO, PUGU, AND JNIA WEATHER STATION

The Board of the Tanzania Meteorological Authority (TMA) conducted a working visit to inspect the Authority’s operations at the Weather Radar Station in Bangulo, Pugu, and the TMA offices located at Julius Nyerere International Airport (JNIA), Dar es Salaam, on July 23, 2025. The visit was led by the Board Chairperson, Hon. Judge Mshibe Ali Bakari, and the Vice Chairperson, Dr. Emmanuel Mpeta.
Speaking during the visit, Judge Mshibe stated that the purpose of the tour was to assess and evaluate the management and performance of TMA’s infrastructure, review the implementation of Board directives aimed at improving service delivery, identify existing challenges, and understand the Authority’s current status and future direction.
“The Board has been issuing directives, and today was a special day to review their implementation,” said Judge Mshibe.
He emphasized that TMA has made significant progress in upgrading its service delivery infrastructure. He also expressed gratitude to the Sixth Phase Government for its continued support in equipping the Authority with modern facilities.
On his part, the Acting Director General of TMA and Vice Chairperson of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), Dr. Ladislaus Chang’a, thanked the Board for visiting and witnessing the Authority’s operations in observation, data processing, and weather forecasting, as well as the modern infrastructure that the Government has facilitated. He also commended the Board for its guidance through various meetings, which has enabled TMA to maintain high standards of service.
Highlighting the benefits of investing in modern meteorological infrastructure in the country, Dr. Chang’a said:
“Through weather radars, the Authority has significantly improved weather forecasting and has successfully conducted radar training for East and Central African countries. Meteorologists from 10 countries in East and Central Africa received training in Mwanza, Tanzania, further elevating the reputation of our nation.”
He further explained that the Government continues to ensure sustainable management of this advanced technology by hiring and empowering experts with the necessary training. To date, TMA has a team of 30 engineers.
Additionally, Board members had the opportunity to visit a modern high-performance computer cluster with the capacity to analyze and process weather data efficiently, enhancing the provision of localized and specific weather forecasts quickly and accurately.
