The Tanzania Shipping Agencies Corporation (TASAC) has acquired two modern rescue boats worth over TSh 4 billion to serve Lake Victoria, in line with a directive from President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan.
The boats have been deployed to Lake Victoria following a series of marine accidents. According to statistics from the Red Cross conducted in 2018, approximately 18,000 people die annually due to water transport accidents.
Speaking during the reception of the boats, TASAC's Ship Inspector and Registrar, Engineer Said Kaheneko, stated that the procurement of the boats was part of President Samia’s instructions aimed at prioritizing the safety and welfare of Tanzanians.
He noted that the boats will also be used for emergency operations involving three countries due to cross-border trade interactions in the region.
“These are the most advanced rescue boats in our history. Their high speed allows them to respond swiftly in the event of a maritime accident,” said Engineer Kaheneko.
“President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan made this possible with a humble heart for her people, and TASAC acted on her instructions to make it a reality,” he added.
Senior Public Relations Officer at TASAC, Mariam Mwayela, emphasized that the boats will significantly enhance rescue operations on Lake Victoria by ensuring quick response during emergencies.
She noted that the decision to station the boats in Mwanza was due to the recurrence of tragic maritime accidents in the lake, which have often led to loss of lives.
“This is a continuation of our efforts—previously we introduced a medical boat, and now we have added rescue boats to strengthen our emergency response capacity,” said Mwayela.
