Dar es Salaam, July 9, 2025 –

The Government of Tanzania, through the Ministry of Information, Culture, Arts and Sports, has officially launched the TAI–Habari Digital System, designed to register and accredit journalists across the country. The launch was officiated by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy, Hon. Dr. Doto Biteko, during a stakeholders’ meeting held in Dar es Salaam.

Through this modern platform, the Journalists Accreditation Board has already registered over 2,900 journalists, each receiving a Digital Press Card that formally verifies their professional identity.

Dr. Biteko noted that this initiative marks a significant step toward enhancing the integrity, transparency, and professionalism of the media sector in Tanzania.

"It is the government's responsibility to ensure that journalists work safely and efficiently using modern, user-friendly systems," he said.

Speaking about the media’s role in the upcoming 2025 General Elections, Dr. Biteko praised the media for its critical contributions to peacebuilding, civic education, and democratic participation—while emphasizing adherence to ethics, accuracy, and impartiality.

He also reaffirmed the government’s continued commitment to media freedom, highlighting that President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s administration has reopened previously suspended media outlets and reinstated licenses that had been revoked, as part of wider efforts to create a more open and supportive media environment.

Government Spokesperson and Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mr. Gerson Msigwa, added that the TAI–Habari system was developed in collaboration with TCRA and the Tanzania Police Force. The aim is to legally recognize journalists, protect them from harassment, and ensure they perform their duties in line with national and international professional standards.

"This year, as we head into the General Elections, we are determined to uphold professionalism. This system sets a clear structure and reinforces the credibility of the journalism profession," said Msigwa.

During the stakeholders' meeting, participants—including representatives from the National Electoral Commission (NEC), civil society organizations, media outlets, and security agencies—agreed that strong cooperation is essential in delivering accurate information to the public and ensuring peaceful, fair elections.

Minister of Information, Prof. Palamagamba Kabudi, commended the launch of the digital system, describing it as a foundational step in strengthening media accountability, ensuring journalist safety, and building a robust media environment in Tanzania.
