SADC RECOGNIZES TANZANIA AS REGIONAL LEADER IN CLEAN COOKING ENERGY IMPLEMENTATION

President of the United Republic of Tanzania, H.E. Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, has been named the leading champion of clean cooking energy advocacy in Africa by Ministers responsible for Energy and Water from the Southern African Development Community (SADC).
The commendation was made today, July 3, 2025, by various leaders and experts from eight SADC countries meeting in Harare, Zimbabwe, at a regional summit aimed at strengthening cooperation in the energy and water sectors.
Speaking during the summit, the Deputy Minister for Energy, Hon. Judith Kapinga, highlighted Tanzania’s ongoing efforts to promote and educate the public on the importance of clean cooking energy, in alignment with the National Clean Cooking Energy Strategy (2024–2034).
Regarding the regional implementation of clean cooking energy, Hon. Kapinga urged SADC to commit to a concrete agenda and strategic actions to expand access to clean cooking energy across the region.
She emphasized the need for innovation within SADC, citing the use of alternative charcoal such as eco-friendly briquettes as an effective example of promoting clean energy adoption among communities.
Hon. Kapinga further called on SADC member states to intensify public education and awareness campaigns on clean cooking energy, and to develop policies that will make clean energy solutions both accessible and integral to sustainable economic development.
In addition, Hon. Kapinga received praise from SADC members for Tanzania’s successful organization and hosting of the Africa Heads of State Energy Summit (Mission 300 - M300), which was held recently in Dar es Salaam.
The Minister of Energy for Malawi, Hon. Ibrahim Matola, also praised President Samia for her bold commitment to promoting clean cooking energy in Tanzania. He recommended that SADC adopt Tanzania as a role model and ambassador for clean cooking energy in the region.
The summit was attended by the Tanzanian Ambassador to Zimbabwe, H.E. Suzan Kaganda, along with technical experts from the Ministry of Energy, including Assistant Commissioner for Power Development Eng. Styden Rwebangila, REA Director General Eng. Hassan Saidy, TPDC Director of Planning and Investment Derick Moshi, TANESCO Director of Power System Control Eng. Deogratius Mariwa, EWURA Director of Economic Regulation Msafiri Mtepa, and officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation.
