SADC: ENERGY SECTOR SHOULD BE A CATALYST FOR AFRICA’S ECONOMIC INTEGRATION.

📌 Kapinga urges SADC to adopt firm commitments and robust strategies to implement the Clean Cooking Energy Agenda
Ministers responsible for Energy and Water from the Southern African Development Community (SADC) member states have emphasized the need for the energy sector to serve as a catalyst for uniting Africa and building its economy.
This call was made today, July 4, 2025, during the conclusion of the SADC Ministerial Meeting held in Harare, Zimbabwe, which focused on strengthening and discussing various matters aimed at promoting regional integration in the energy and water sectors.
Speaking during the closing of the meeting, Zimbabwe’s Minister of Energy and Power Development, Hon. Dr. July Moyo, urged the SADC community to prioritize the energy and water sectors in order to make them more productive for citizens and instrumental in economic growth, as energy is a key driver of development.
He also commended Tanzania for organizing and successfully hosting the Africa Heads of State Energy Summit under the “Mission 300” (M300), which was recently held in Dar es Salaam. Dr. Moyo also expressed appreciation to all member states that participated in that important summit.
For his part, Malawi’s Minister of Energy, Hon. Ibrahim Matola, called on SADC to ensure the advancement of all priority projects within the region to make the energy sector a reliable foundation for building their respective national economies.
Meanwhile, Tanzania’s Deputy Minister for Energy, Hon. Judith Kapinga, urged SADC to develop and implement concrete strategies to ensure resolutions made in various regional conferences are effectively translated into action, to benefit citizens and drive national development. She emphasized that the energy sector must be a transformative force within the SADC region.
On the implementation of clean cooking energy initiatives, Hon. Kapinga called on SADC to establish strong commitments and practical implementation strategies to ensure that the clean cooking energy agenda reaches more people across the region.
The meeting, which concluded today, was also attended by Tanzania’s Ambassador to Zimbabwe, H.E. Suzan Kaganda; various experts from the Ministry of Energy, including Assistant Commissioner for Electricity Development Eng. Styden Rwebangila; Director General of the Rural Energy Agency (REA), Eng. Hassan Saidy; Director of Planning and Investment at TPDC, Mr. Derick Moshi; Director of Power System Control at TANESCO, Eng. Deogratius Mariwa; Director of Economic Regulation at EWURA, Mr. Msafiri Mtepa; and officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation.
