RC Chalamila Urges UDART to Improve Bus Rapid Transit Services in Dar es Salaam.
Dar es Salaam.
The Regional Commissioner of Dar es Salaam, Hon. Albert Chalamila, conducted an inspection visit to the Kimara Mwisho Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) station in Ubungo District and urged UDART to enhance its services to address the challenges facing passengers.
Speaking during the visit, RC Chalamila expressed dissatisfaction with the current BRT services, citing an insufficient number of buses, which has led to congestion and inconvenience for commuters. He emphasized that this situation contradicts President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan’s vision of improving public transportation in Dar es Salaam.
"This service is currently not meeting the expectations of the people. The shortage of buses is causing serious inconvenience, which is unacceptable. UDART must act swiftly to improve the service," said Chalamila.
The RC also inspected the ongoing construction of the Ubungo–Kimara road under TANROADS and called on the agency to closely monitor the contractor to ensure timely completion. Additionally, he recommended the provision of public toilets at major stations like Kimara to improve passenger comfort.
On his part, UDART’s Scheduling and Control Manager, Mr. Daniel Madilu, stated that an assessment of the challenges had been completed and that 100 buses had been ordered from China, expected to arrive in September this year.
In a related development, RC Chalamila visited the DART headquarters at Ubungo Maji and highlighted government strategies under President Dr. Samia to address BRT challenges. He revealed that a new investor, Trans Dar, has been secured for the Kimara route, while for the Mbagala corridor, investor Mophat is set to commence operations soon.
Meanwhile, DART Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Othman Kiamia, pledged to address the existing issues, including increasing the number of high-quality buses to improve services and eliminate commuter hardships.
