President Samia to Officially Launch Tanzania’s National Development Vision 2050 on July 17.
Dar es Salaam.
The President of the United Republic of Tanzania, H.E. Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, is expected to officially launch the National Development Vision 2050 on July 17, 2025, at the Jakaya Kikwete Convention Centre (JKCC) in Dodoma.
This was revealed today, July 8, 2025, by the Minister for Planning and Investment, Prof. Kitila Mkumbo, during a media briefing with the Tanzania Editors’ Forum (TEF) held in Dar es Salaam. He stated that the launch will coincide with the Third National Vision Forum.
Prof. Mkumbo highlighted that the process of preparing Vision 2050 involved broad national and international participation, with input from a wide range of Tanzanians forming the foundation of the Vision.
“This Vision does not belong to any political party – it is the vision of all Tanzanians. Political parties understand that their manifestos must align with the Vision. We do not expect any party to produce a manifesto that contradicts the National Vision,” Prof. Mkumbo emphasized.
He explained that Vision 2050 was developed based on public input collected through stakeholder forums involving all sectors – including political parties, civil society organizations, academia, media, and community groups – with the aim of creating a shared national outlook.
As part of the drafting process, a team of experts studied the experiences of several countries that were once at a similar development stage as Tanzania but have since made significant progress. These countries included Morocco, Mauritius, Kenya, South Africa, China, India, Indonesia, Singapore, Vietnam, and South Korea.
“We examined how Vietnam and Singapore increased the value of their products and used strong national visions to drive development. These are critical lessons for us,” he added.
After data collection, drafting, and technical review, the first draft of the Vision was presented to the public for feedback. The next stage involved engaging local and international organizations that partner with Tanzania, to ensure their aid, loan programs, and development projects align with the Vision’s goals.
The second draft of the Vision was then submitted to the Prime Minister, incorporating the feedback from Tanzanians, before being handed over to the Minister for Planning and Investment for final government deliberations through the Permanent Secretaries' forum.
On June 22, 2025, the Cabinet officially approved the National Development Vision 2050, after which it was presented to Parliament for ratification.
According to Prof. Mkumbo, this Vision will guide the country’s development for more than the next two decades, under the leadership of successive presidents until the year 2050.
“Our goal is to shift political debates towards how to achieve development goals, rather than where we are going – because we have already agreed, as a nation, on where we are headed,” he concluded.
