The President of the United Republic of Tanzania, H.E. Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, has emphasized that the Uranium Mining and Processing Project located at the Mkuju River in Namtumbo District, Ruvuma Region, is a strategic step that will position Tanzania among the world’s top ten uranium-producing countries.
Speaking today, July 30, 2025, during the official launch of the Uranium Processing Pilot Plant at the Mkuju River site, President Samia noted that this milestone marks the beginning of Tanzania’s journey to becoming a key hub for uranium production and processing in Africa.
President Samia stated that this initiative is part of Tanzania’s broader strategy to achieve a middle-income economy by leveraging its natural resources, including uranium, which holds significant global value.
> “Today marks a historic moment for our country as Tanzania officially begins its journey to become one of the major global producers of uranium. Uranium is a strategic mineral we are blessed to have, and its availability will contribute to clean energy production and strengthen Tanzania’s position in the global mining sector,” said President Samia.
She further highlighted that this development places Tanzania as a research and processing hub for uranium globally and within Africa—opening new opportunities in technology, academia, and investment, and attracting international capital into the strategic mineral sector.
The project is expected to benefit the nation through government dividends, where the 20% stake held by the government is projected to generate about USD 40 million annually. Additional benefits include job creation, research opportunities, royalties, and local economic growth.
President Samia also directed that the project should be inclusive by implementing corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives such as education, healthcare, water, and road infrastructure while adhering to environmental conservation standards to protect the Mkuju ecosystem.
For his part, the Minister for Minerals, Hon. Anthony Mavunde, thanked President Samia for prioritizing the mining sector, which has led to the launch of major projects like Mkuju. He noted that this is the largest uranium project in East and Central Africa, making Tanzania one of only five African countries with large-scale uranium projects—thanks to the favorable investment climate established under President Samia’s leadership.
Additionally, Minister Mavunde reaffirmed that Tanzania’s Mining Act mandates investors to ensure surrounding communities benefit directly through CSR programs.
Meanwhile, the President of Uranium One, Pavel Larionov, stated that the project will produce approximately 300,000 tons of uranium annually, significantly boosting global uranium supply while creating substantial revenue and employment opportunities for Tanzania.
