The Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority (NCAA) marked the conclusion of the World Rangers Day celebrations by organizing various sporting events involving Wildlife Rangers, Police Officers from Karatu District, and a tree planting initiative at Welwel Secondary School in Karatu, Arusha Region.

The NCAA Conservation Commissioner led officers and rangers in planting trees at Welwel Secondary School, educating the community on conservation and environmental protection, and participating in different sports activities including a 5-kilometer run and a football match featuring rangers from Pololeti Game Reserve, rangers from the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, and the Karatu Police Force.

“NCAA is part of the community. In carrying out our responsibilities, we work closely with other institutions, including the Police Forces in Ngorongoro and Karatu districts, as well as local residents. That is why today we engaged in athletics, physical exercises, and football to strengthen our unity, especially in activities aimed at enhancing security and protecting the nation’s resources,” explained Commissioner Badru.

He further noted that NCAA also has the responsibility of providing environmental education and promoting participatory conservation among communities surrounding the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. In line with the celebrations, NCAA distributed free tree seedlings to residents, planted trees at Welwel Secondary School, and held discussions with teachers and students to emphasize the importance of caring for planted trees and preserving the environment at large.

Representing the Karatu District Commissioner, the District Executive Officer, Mr. Bahati Mfungo, commended NCAA for its collaboration with the people of Karatu District, particularly in providing environmental education, tree planting initiatives, mitigating human-wildlife conflicts, and supporting various community development projects, including social services.

World Rangers Day was first commemorated in 2007 to honor rangers who lost their lives in the line of duty. This year’s theme, “Rangers: Powering Transformative Conservation”, highlights the vital role of wildlife rangers in driving real change in the conservation of natural resources, which are the nation’s heritage.
