The Commissioner for Conservation at the Tanzania Forest Services Agency (TFS), Professor Dos Santos Silayo, has chaired a leadership meeting of the African Forestry and Wildlife Commission (AFWC), currently taking place over three days in Accra, Ghana.

The meeting brings together senior leaders from member countries of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to discuss progress, challenges, and joint strategies to enhance sustainable forest and wildlife management across Africa.

It also serves as a preparatory platform for the upcoming 25th session of the AFWC, which will be held later this year, coinciding with the African Forest and Wildlife Week celebrations.

In his opening remarks, Professor Silayo—who also serves as Chairperson of the AFWC and Vice-Chair of the Committee on Forestry (COFO)—highlighted that the Commission is a vital forum for African countries to deliberate on policies, successes, and the challenges facing the forestry and wildlife sectors.

He emphasized that the AFWC plays a key advisory role to both FAO and member states on policies, plans, and best practices for managing these resources
