RC MTANDA URGES REA CONTRACTORS TO SPEED UP SOLAR ELECTRICITY PROJECT IMPLEMENTATION ON ISLANDS
The Regional Commissioner of Mwanza, Hon. Said Mtanda, has called on contractors implementing the distribution of small-scale solar power systems in island areas to manage time effectively and complete the projects on schedule, in order to relieve residents of those areas from the burden of unreliable energy access.
Speaking on June 13, 2025, at his office in Mwanza city, Hon. Mtanda also urged technical experts from the Rural Energy Agency (REA) to ensure that contractors are paid on time, a move that will help them proceed with their work without unnecessary delays.
“It’s crucial to use time wisely and complete these projects on schedule. The government recognizes the efforts of every contractor who works diligently and efficiently — those are the ones entrusted with more contracts. Good work speaks for itself,” said RC Mtanda.
The Regional Commissioner also emphasized the importance of contractors introducing themselves to local authorities at regional, district, division, and village levels so that communities are well-informed about the project, actively involved, and able to share feedback, information, or suggestions that could contribute to its success.
“By doing so, you’ll gain strong cooperation from the community. And when challenges arise, it becomes easier to get support or crucial information from them,” he added.
For his part, the REA Lake Zone Project Manager, Engineer Ernest Makale, stated that the solar power project is being implemented on 78 islands located within five districts of Mwanza Region — Sengerema, Buchosa, Ukerewe, Magu, and Ilemela.
Engineer Makale also revealed that over TZS 4 billion has already been allocated for the project, which aims to provide electricity to approximately 8,410 households at a subsidized cost of up to 75%.
The main goal of the project is to ensure that island residents have access to reliable electricity, a move expected to improve their living standards and stimulate economic development in the targeted areas.
