“PIKA SMART” CAMPAIGN PROMOTING CLEAN COOKING ENERGY LAUNCHED

📌 Commissioner Luoga emphasizes the use of electricity as a clean cooking energy source

The Commissioner for Electricity and Renewable Energy, Engineer Innocent Luoga, has officially launched a national campaign aimed at promoting the use of clean cooking energy powered by electricity, under the slogan PIKA SMART.

Engineer Luoga launched the campaign today, June 13, 2025, in Dar es Salaam on behalf of the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Energy, Engineer Felchesmi Mramba.

The campaign has been organized by the Modern Energy Cooking Services (MECS) with funding from UKAID, in collaboration with the Tanzanian Government through the Ministry of Energy.

Engineer Luoga stated that the campaign is part of the government’s efforts to encourage citizens to adopt clean cooking energy, with a goal of reaching 80% clean cooking energy usage among Tanzanians by the year 2034.

He reassured the public about the safety and affordability of using electricity for cooking, noting that Tanzania has a surplus of electricity to meet national demand.

“As we all know, the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Plant is now complete, which has increased the country’s power generation capacity to approximately 4,031 megawatts. This electricity has already reached all 12,318 villages in Tanzania, so there is every reason for citizens to switch to clean electric cooking,” said Eng. Luoga.

Speaking on behalf of the TANESCO Managing Director, the Director of Planning and Investment at TANESCO, Engineer Henryfried Byabato, emphasized that the utility has been actively encouraging the public to use clean electric cooking energy due to the country’s sufficient electricity supply.

He added that modern technologies have improved significantly, making electric cooking appliances more efficient and using less power.

The PIKA SMART campaign comes at a crucial time, as the Ministry of Energy recently launched the National Communications Strategy to provide guidance to stakeholders in advancing clean cooking energy awareness initiatives.

This supports the efforts of Her Excellency Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, President of the United Republic of Tanzania, who is a champion of clean cooking energy, aiming to transition Tanzanians from traditional fuels to cleaner and safer alternatives.
