The Government has developed a mapping system that highlights areas with disaster risk indicators across regions and localities, aimed at enhancing preparedness and response strategies when disasters occur.
This was revealed in Dar es Salaam yesterday by the Permanent Secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office – Policy, Parliament, and Coordination, Dr. Jim Yonazi, during a meeting of the National Disaster Management Technical Committee.
The meeting focused on discussing the Disaster Risk Mapping System, the User Guide for the Disaster Risk Map, the National Strategy for Disaster Risk Financing, and the Humanitarian Cash Transfer Guidelines.
Dr. Yonazi stated that Tanzania continues to implement specific strategies to ensure communities are adequately prepared to prevent and respond to disasters, particularly those linked to climate change.
"The Government has established a specialized system with various maps showing disaster risk indicators across regions and districts. This system enables all sectors, regional administrations, and local authorities to plan and implement appropriate strategies to address disaster risks in their respective areas," he said.
He further explained that the risk data available on the maps will assist stakeholders in planning and implementing development projects, including land use planning.
“This system will help us build our capacity to manage disasters both within and outside the country,” he added.
Dr. Yonazi also noted that the Technical Committee approved several disaster response guidelines, which will be implemented in collaboration with national and international partners.
